| Comments: |
Sandwich Mountain Trail has been well traveled. We wore spikes up to a big moose yard at the Smarts Brook Trail junction. Snowshoes from there up/down Sandwich Dome and most of the way down Smarts Brook Trail, the latter of which was heavily moose postholed for 1-2 miles. The moose did a great job of staying on trail which was a plus for us because, being in designated wilderness, it was very lightly blazed and had not recently been traveled by humans.. :)
* Snowshoes are necessary on upper Smarts Brook Trail.
Maybe 3 miles from the terminus we came across snowshoe tracks of someone who had turned around, so the rest of our hike was broken out. At the cross country ski trail junction, we switched back to spikes since the trail was packed and heavily traveled from there. |
