Trails
Trails: Signal Ridge Trail, Carrigain Notch Trail, bushwhack
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, November 11, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The road was open and some low clearance cars were scrapping on the frozen snow mound in the center. A few non-AWD cars needed a gentle push in the parking lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Wet Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing on the Signal Ridge Trail had a “bridge” of downed trees and rocks so we were able to keep our feet dry. The use of spikes made it much easier since both the rocks and the trees were covered in ice. The rest were smaller and easier.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One large walk-around blowdown along the Carrigain Notch Trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Had a dog with us and he did fine.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost my phone on the way up and found it on the way down.

Comments
Comments: Did this one with Monica and the Random Group of Hikers.

There wasn’t enough snow for snowshoes so we left them in the cars and never regretted it. In fact, they would have been more work than they were worth - frozen trail, still lots of things sticking up on the bushwhack, etc. Spikes were fine. The route from bushwhack boulder was very obvious pretty much up to the talus field. It mostly followed the “standard” route. It was made even more obvious by pink flagging that had been placed all along the route.

After the talus field we opted to check out the “marked” trail instead of go the “standard” route since it seemed to split the two and go up through the large rock and cliff section. It was actually fairly easy, albeit very steep. Having never done this one I had nothing to compare it to but one who was with us and has done it numerous times said this seemed like a more fun and enjoyable route.

Had a hard time opening the canister but managed to pop the frozen top with some force. Was #99 of the NEHH for me and #98 for Monica. I should finish today on Peak Above the Nubble.
