I wasn't in the mood for the technical Baldface Circle trail ascent, so I went up via Slippery Brook which was quick and easy.
Of all the great views on this hike, I think the most impressive was the view of the Baldface ridge itself from the exposed sections at the top of Bicknell Ridge trail looking south.
Shortly after those views on the way down, I think the noise from my hiking poles interrupted a bear's lunch! From about fifty yeards away, I heard a big commotion and a growl before something scurried down the mountain. In retrospect, I kind of doubt it was a bear because a few other hikers had passed on this route shortly before me, but the growl or grunt really gives me pause. Glad I didn't get to find out.
If you're coming from the north, the Maine section of Rt. 113 has a fresh coat of asphalt and improves the already beautiful drive through Evans Notch. Confirmed that the Wild River road was still closed. |
