Parked at Pinkham Notch and took Lost Pond Trail to Wildcat Ridge Trail.
Trail conditions: Lost Pond and the ascent up Wildcat Ridge had 6" of fresh powder on top of hard packed snow/ice. Hard blue ice in spots on steeper sections of Wildcat Ridge. Drifts of 1-2 feet between D and A peaks. Post holing if you step off the trail.
Gear: Microspikes most of the ascent up Wildcat Ridge and crampons on the descent. Snowshoes on the ridge after I got sick of trudging through drifts.
Overall a great hike. The descent down Wildcat Ridge to Lost Pond would have been scary without crampons/axe. Snowshoes up on the ridge made life easier but weren't necessary. |
