a note on the equipment selected above. snowshoes are currently nothing but a liability on the icy snow dusted trails and only of use if utilizing the ski trails. given how prevalent the ice is on the trails some may want crampons for sections that push light traction though i had no need today.
noting the poor trail conditions on the lower brook trail i opted to throw on snowshoes and hike up the ski trails to the upper crossing of the brook trail. brook trail from there to the saddle had a light coating of new snow over fairly continuous ice. i left snowshoes in the saddle and switched to hillsound spikes. the light snow cover made it hard to identify the plentiful ice, but once on the ascent of belknap some areas seemed to actually have old hard pack snow underneath though there are is still plenty of ice underneath to the summit. up to gunstock there was some significant ice under the snow and i tossed snowshoes back on and jumped off early onto the ski trails. i descended the ski trails (using the old route of the range trail) to the middle mountain and got back on the range trail. snowshoes came back off and spikes on. contined new snow over ice or crust up to rowe. the access road was very icy underneath a layer of snow and the best walking was often just of the side of the road in what was some good grippy snow. |
