Comments
Comments: The lower part of both trails was autumn-like with lots of leaves and some patches of black ice but not enough for spikes - because they were easy to step around without going off trail. However,, both the Welch and Dickey ledges had a LOT of thick slippery ice. Almost too much ice for just spikes so we had to be VERY slow and careful in those areas. It varied between large areas of thick ice with no alternate route around and areas of bare rock so there was a lot of taking on/off of the spikes. The more aggressive points of the Hillsound spikes fared better than the daintier Kahtoolas points but both worked well with extreme caution and patience. Each trail had a blowdown or two but they were easy to duck under or go over.
