We walked the trail to the logging road, then followed the logging road East to a large clearing where we started the 'whack up W. Baldface. The road has a mostly acceptable herd path. We tended towards the ridge to the East of the peak and were rewarded with about 1/4 mile of gorgeous fern filled birch glades. On the way down we stayed more to the West to pick up a spur of the logging road that goes about 1/2 way up. It's flagged but you are not likely to find where it leaves the main road in the heavy new growth. We then followed the logging road over to the base of Black (Jackson) and ascended that straight up the fall line through mostly open woods. Steep. To return to the car we attempted to follow the logging road. This worked great for about a mile where, at a beaver dam, the road crosses a stream on a bridge. And that's where we lost the road so we 'whacked a short distance back to the trail. The road has good footing and much less mud than the trail provided you can find it.
My thanks go out to Steve, Bill, and Lady Di for getting these bad boys checked off! |
