A very mixed bag today. Totally bare ground going up Gunstock Mountain trail to summit. Once you start heading toward Belknap you'll want to put on light traction. You will be encountering a mix of bare ground, hard ice, frozen granular ice. I used an old pair of microspikes, but they didn't instill confidence, so I skirted the hard ice when I could. Some nasty postholes along the ridge over to Piper from Gunstock, but there is a good crust so you can go around those bad spots without any problem. Coming down off Piper I was lulled into taking the microspikes off and of course, a 100 yards down the trail it turned to ice again. I ended up getting out fine just skirting the edge of the ice monorail...bare ground. A few places you'll have to bushwhack a bit to avoid the ice if you bare boot it. If I were doing Piper trail, I'd just put on the light traction, less aggravation. |
