Comments
Comments: I have been anxiously awaiting the Rollins trail since reading reports since the heavy snow. Probably just a handful of determined barebooters have made a total mess of this trail. Postholes everywhere. In fact I would not be surprised if several frozen postholers are discovered at the bottom of some literally endless and deep holes when the snow finally melts. It would be easier to break trail with 2 feet of snow than this mess. I hope the AMC 4k committee adopts a policy of withholding winter patches for the 48 for hikers not using snowshoes. Enough of my ranting but its really becoming a problem. Blueberry Ledge and Dicey Mills were not too bad. The snow was very hard today once the cold kicked in. Lower elevations on both trails did not have much snow left so spikes were fine. There was some open wet spots on Dicey Mills below the river crossing. We used snowshoes on the steeps of Blueberry Ledge but switched to HillsHounds for the ledges on the upper Blueberry ledge Trail. Snowshoes across Rollins and up to Passaconaway and down to the brook crossing where we switched back to spikes to get across the birch log. Not much snow from here to the car so spikes were fine. Had some nice views of the Tripyramids from Passaconaway. 2 to 3 inches on new snow on the upper levels created some drifting.
