Plenty of parking at Wild River/Basin trailhead, three other vehicles on my return. Wild River Road in good shape. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Wild River crossing on Shelburne Trail is a narrow wade in knee high, slow moving, water (at current levels). All other crossings on the route can be hopped with care, on sometimes wet rocks. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Basin has a crown down, not completely blocking the trail, about 2/3 of the way up to Blue Brook Connector. Eagle Link is brushy in a few spots. Wild River had its usual plethora of stepovers/climbovers. Rainbow has a few stepovers. Kenduskeag to Shelburne Moriah isn't bad, other than some mud, but beyond the summit the trail is very brushed in. Shelburne Trail has a lot of stepovers/climbovers, and is pretty brushy within the wilderness, par for the course. All other trails in good shape. |

Saw several out with their humans, enjoying the cool, cloudy weather. |

Picked up a tick somewhere during my pre-dawn journey up Basin, Basin Rim, and Meader Ridge. Another crawled out of my shoe during a break on Eagle Link. Some frisky mosquitoes at Wild River and Rainbow junction. Bugs were otherwise a non-issue, due to cold, and wind, and eventually rain. |

Overall, not the best weather day for this loop, but it certainly added to the challenge! Hiked through the pre-dawn and caught a subdued, but brilliant sunrise from Eagle Crag, then worked my way across the valley and up Carter Dome, where high clouds had already moved in. Good going over the Carter Range, though descending off North Carter is always a treat. Low clouds suddenly appeared when I reached Moriah, not obscuring the views while I was there, but once enveloped in them, the rain began. It rained lightly at first, then became wind driven as I crossed the various open ledges on the way to and from Shelburne Moriah, getting soaked by branches more than the rain. A steady rain accompanied me all the way down Shelburne Trail, until it stopped as I crossed the river. So no views from Shelburne Moriah, but a long loop to be remembered for better weather! |
