There's only a small handful of dogs that could pull this off safely right now. Would not recommend it until the ice melts |

Put on my microspikes about a quarter mile shy of the North Carter Trail junction and they stayed on the rest of the way except a small dry stretch below the outlook dropping steeply down to Carter Notch until a hundred feet above Carter Notch Lake. Some spots I had to veer off trail on the descent but with the warm temperatures my microspikes, which have taken a beating this month were biting into the ice well all day. The small slide below A Peak was not bad to cross as there was enough soft snow, and the steep side hill sections heading up to A Peak had soft snow and ice in other spots, if I was descending I'd wear crampons, or if it gets cold again I'd wear crampons but light traction was fine. Between Wildcat A and D there is an icy sections dropping down from B, and as reported last weekend a monster of an ice flow heading into Wildcat Col between C and D. Luckily, the warm temps made things a little easier but I still had to use extreme caution descending this section, which was pretty incredible! Great summer temps with wild conditions in the woods, If you're heading up there I'd still suggest bringing your crampons just in case for a little while longer. |
