In sunny, above freezing conditions, this loop can be barebooted with care at this point (unless we get more frozen precip). Light traction may be needed when temps dip below freezing, as there's enough runoff on the ledges that they could set up as black ice again.
Heading up Welch, there was minor mud along the brook portion and occasional black ice once the trail pulls away from the brook. Plenty of runoff on the ledges, but grippy enough. Nowhere near enough ice in the afternoon temperatures to consider light traction, but I did slip once on unexpected black ice.
Nowhere near as much ice as I expected between the peaks. Just a little above the col that can either be shuffled or avoided. Some wet ledges as well.
The only ice of significance I encountered was perhaps a quarter of a mile past Dickey, descending (counterclockwise). Between ledges, there was perhaps 100 feet of trail covered in a large ice bulge. One can carefully bushwhack above it for about 20 feet to avoid it. A smaller ice bulge just below it as well. No ice of significance below there, and even step off the last ledge was fine. |
