A fantastic afternoon to head out to the DC-3 wreck on Success. Finally got to take in the views from the Success Outlook, and they were every bit as phenomenal as I've seen in the pictures. Semi-frozen ground down low on Success Trail, with small avoidable ice flows near and above the Outlook Loop. More consistent ice once on the Mahoosuc Trail, one spot required creative footwork to get around ice on a slab, but I managed without pulling out the spikes. A dusting of snow nearing, and up on, the ridge. Found the herd path to the wreck, and followed it down to the boundary and directly to the site. Hung out on the summit for a bit on the way back, enjoying the sun, though it was a bit breezy and cold. Over the ice and quickly down to the car, I even got home before the sun was down! Not a soul around, mid-week hiking is great. |
