The leaves are maybe 75% down here and they are hiding the roots and rocks underneath as well as the trail itself. There were a couple of times when I was not 100% sure I was on the trail and since it seemed to me this section of the AT isn't blazed quite as well as some others it was enough to stop and take a good look around.
In the morning there were spots of crunchy mud which turned to plain old mud later on - nothing significant though. Some of the rock slabs in the upper half of the trail were wet in addition to having some leaves scattered about which made attention and caution necessary. The iron rung area had a little ice but could be negotiated with care.
I only saw one other person (descending) on my ascent and had the summit to myself for quite some time. On my way down I probably saw about 15 other folks heading up. I had considered taking the Ranger Trail back to the lot but since this trail was so enjoyable with the various viewpoints and generally good footing I didn't feel any compelling reason to. |
