|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Rattle River trail is relatively flat past the cabin, where there are very few blazes along the trail. I saw a white blaze and figured I would be looking for white blazes. The trail became overgrown as it meanders along the river and I started wondering if I was going the right way. It is the only way to go, so just keep going. Don't get confused by the Red blazes, just keep going. The trail doesn’t get steep, really steep, until you get to the last river crossing about a mile before you reach the Kenduskeag Trail. This section of the trail has stone stairs on a good portion of it, making it easier to ascend and descend. The Kenduskeag trais is a muddy, bushwhacking hell hole. One misstep and you will be shin deep in mud. Use your hiking stick to test it before walking. You will bushwhack through trees, you will lose elevation gain as the trail descends, ascends, and descends again. Just keep going you will eventually make it out. Don't be fooled by the first large cairn you come to, keep going until you come to the 2nd, larger, cairn. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
There were a couple of areas near the summit where I had to give my 10 lb chihuahua a little help up. My dog didn't have any problems with the mud but a larger dog may sink, bushwhacking shouldn't be a problem for dogs. Lots of water on the trail. |
|
| Bugs: |
Lots of mosquitoes and black flies on the Kenduskeag trail. |
|
| Lost and Found: |
I lost a knee strap, if you find it, feel free to keep it. I have plenty. |

| Comments: |
This hike was hard. Close to 3,000 feet of elevation gain on this hike and every inch is worked for. |
