Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks East Osceola, Mt. Osceola, NH
Trails
Trails: Greeley Ponds Trail, Mt. Osceola Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 4, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Six vehicles on my arrival at 2 pm, none on return at 7:45 pm. People need to park more efficiently to avoid wasting space in small parking lots. For example, there was wasted space that could have allowed at least two additional vehicles at the Kanc lot. So, if you are the second to arrive, park close to the first vehicle, if your are third, park close to one or the other two vehicles, etc. It is really quite simple, and hikers are not likely to cause damage by opening doors into your vehicle as they do in the city.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Mud - Significant, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Largest crossing on Greeley Ponds Trail required submergence of feet for rock hopping on return in early evening.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Three blow downs, all easily stepped over or ducked under
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Dogs that manage humans who post here would not have any problems.
Bugs
Bugs: A couple of deer flies on the East Osceola summit; one mosquito in parking lot at end of hike
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Someone left a piece of paper with a cheesecake recipe stuck on a tree branch, so I removed. First time that I have seen that.

Comments
Comments: I carried snowshoes and Hillsounds, but did not use either, as the rail was solid, as long as I walked the straight and narrow. But, amazing how deep the post holes are to the sides of the rail on the ridge between the summits. Excellent deep snow with steps on both the rock slab traverse and the exit gully on East Osceola. Ramp variant to climber's right of the chimney on Osceola dry and straight forward. Greeley Ponds Trail essentially snow free, with patches of dirty ice, then snow and ice (soft ice, no worries) increase on the climb of East Osceola, with 4-5 ft depths above 3500 ft. Beautiful weather, so spent over an hour soaking in the rays on the Osceola summit, where temperature was 71 F at about 5 pm.
