i left the northeast corner of the parking lot straight into the woods. 12-18 inches of powder over a semi consolidated base in the mostly open woods with deeper pockets as i bushwhacked east to pick up the forest road. i hit the forest road at an old landing and continued up the road bearing left at a fork. i went a couple hundred more yards then left the road east to pick up the southwest running ridge coming off the peak. woods were nice and open as i wound my way up the ridge. snow depths increased with some drifted areas. i followed the ridge all the way up to the peak with one small sag just before the final short climb to the recognized highpoint. i was able to stay in mostly open woods all the way to the top.
nice bushwhack. i had used a route similar to this a couple springs ago and it proved good once again today. this is the friendliest of the hitchcock peaks in my opinion. some beautiful open woods along the ridge with good filtered views to osceola, scar, black, etc. temps were cold, but the mountain provided a wind break for most of the upper portion of the hike. slow going on the ascent, but down in about half the time. great to be out.
