|
| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking lot almost full at 10:30 this morning -- no surprise on Memorial Day weekend. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The single major crossing, of the South Fork of the Hancock Branch near the trailhead, is easily rock-hopped. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
No blowdowns. Sections of the trail are very rocky, but they always are. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
The Chimney: Tuckerman actually climbed the thing, but I had to haul Polly, who was a little freaked out, up one spot. Coming down, we took the detour. Either way, it's tough truckin' for a dog, as are the steep boulder-choked climbs beginning at about 3,100 feet and continuing up to the ridge line. I think approaching from the Tripoli Road side would be better for a dog, though there's no avoiding the Chimney if you want to do both peaks.
There's a very small stream at 2,650 feet and then a tiny little spring, not reliable, at 2,850 feet, and that's about it for water after the Greeley Ponds-Osceola Trail junction, so carry extra. |

| Bugs: |
Nice cool wind kept all the bugs away today! |

| Comments: |
Greeley Ponds Trail was crowded with families out for a Memorial Day weekend hike. Mt. Osceola Trail was pretty much empty going up until we passed East Osceola and were headed for Mt. Osceola. Big crowd on Mt. Osceola summit.
But a beautiful day all around. |
