Thought it would be easy to do Wildcat A, but was surprised by the deep, wet and heavy snow I encountered just before the Carter Dome trail jct. Put on my snowshoes there and broke trail to the height of land. I headed up Wildcat Ridge Tr. as far as the steep slide. Had second thought about crossing it with just snowshoes. Did not want to become a headline story in the Manchester Union and turned back. With crampons I might have considered it, but at that time I was already tired from breaking trail in that heavy, wet snow, plus, I was way behind my estimated hiking time. I also thought about Becca's report on her attempt on Galehead and how she had a turn around time and, wisely, gave up on it. With all that snow I would wait two days before heading up high now and let the warm weather take care of the surplus of new, slushy snow. The trail to Carter Notch Hut has been packed out by snowshoes by me, a father and son I met and the hutmaster I met in the parking lot when I got back. |
