Comments
Comments: Up the north side of Baldface Circle Trail to Eagle Crag then the Baldfaces, then down via Baldface Knob and Slippery Brook with party of 6. Still about 2-3 feet of snow on mtn. Some bare ground starting to show in wet gullies down below. Still some ice bridges at brooks but not for long. Lots of moose-generated postholes on trails. N Side of Baldface Circle Trail had not been broken out. Loose granular snow now somewhat packed. Center of trail is firm beneath. Route across ridge unbroken as well, should now be obvious for a while. Baldface Knob Trail and Slippery Brook were found packed hard. There were a few technical sections of steep slope snowfield just below Eagle Crag and S. of North Baldface summit. We managed the latter by descending backward and kicking in, but temps were warm and snow was soft. Would have been better to have an ax for safety and control. In freezing conditions, could harden up into ice making it much more dangerous. Other trails: we bumped into a fellow who tried Bicknell Ridge and found himself in snow up to his waist. Trail to Mt. Eastman did not appear broken out. S. section of Baldface Circle Trail showed minimal break-out--we did not go that way b/c of ledges.
