Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Meant to go in and out on Wildcat Ridge, missed trailhead so did 19 mile instead

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossing at Rt. 16 tricky with ice, but water not high ... likely easier in daylight!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Ascent via Wildcat Ridge Trail to Wildcat A from Carter Moriah junction had several blowdowns (not as expansive as those on Rollins Trail between Whiteface and Passaconaway, but inconvenient at tight steep turn points) - I only cleared 2 small ones, too low on daylight to do more - most are 8" and smaller, but they mandate a belly-crawl to pass. One jumble can be climbed over, cleared a couple branches to ease. Viewpoint sign on Carter Dome is broken off at base.

Comments
Comments: Significant ice sheets on ascent from pond to Carter Dome, micro-spikes ineffective with new powdery 1-2" snow that fell this morning. Challenging, manageable. Similar tiered ice sheets even on 19 Mile Brook Trail, but mostly pass-aroundable. Similar for Wildcat Ridge, though less of them. Arguably a thick damp snow would make these sections easier to pass than in their current state. All-in-all, a doable route, but ice pack sheets will slow your pace notably, allow time accordingly, as also for Wildcat A ascent blow-downs. Otherwise, trails are pretty dry and fast, especially with micro-spikes. Not enough bad spots for crampons though, unless you take them on and off a few times.
