Used the small Bog Brook trailhead parking (no fee - space for about 4 vehicles. There was another small lot for two vehicles up Carter Notch Road. |

Selected a route that avoided crossing the Wildcat River (FR233). Only crossing of any significance was Bog Brook at the confluence with the Wildcat River. Easily crossed on rocks. The Wildcat River crossing just uphill from the Wild River terminus would be difficult as the water was high and flowing strongly. |

The Wildcat River Trail was in good condition with many nice bog bridges. The Wild River Trail had significant mud areas that lacked good stepping stones or bog bridges. Relied on roots, some rocks, sticks, and perimeter areas but still managed to sink in to the mud several times. One large tree broken in the trunk extends over the trail shortly before the junction with the Rainbow Trail. Rainbow Trail has many downed trees that were easily stepped over except the evergreen just minutes from the summit which required a bit more effort. I was able to clear out many small trees and branches that obsructed the trail. There were a few short stretches of eroded trenches from washouts. Undergrowth in the open birch forest will need brushing next Spring. |

It was nice to hike Cater Dome from the Wild River side as an alternative to the more frequently used trails from Pinkham Notch. Saw no other hikers all day. There was snow on the evergreens starting around 4,200 feet. No snow on the ground. Wore blaze orange clothing although I saw nor heard any hunters. The birch forest on the lower section of the Rainbow Trail was devastated by Ice Strorm '98 and subsequently battered by storm winds. FR233 is the gated road to the right at the end of Carter Notch Road. |
