Spoke with Greg, the Russell Pond ranger, who gave me excellent directions for the old tote road leading right to Mullen Pond and the subsequent bushwhack up Mullen. He was an incredible knowledge base as he has bushwhacked most of the peaks in the park multiple times and knows the woods there like the back of his hand. Getting to Mullen Pond was quick and easy. That's a beautiful spot. I visited one of the ledges overlooking the pond, then fought through some jailbar fir to the saddle where the woods opened up mostly to treeline. There were some large boulders that required some slow going. The top of Mullen, like North Turner, was incredible. I will return here someday.
Going from Mullen to Wassataquoik was much less fun. The woods stayed thick much of the way, no matter which side of the ridge I was on. I fought my way up to the ledges near the summit of Wassataquoik, which were very nice. From there I followed more open woods to the true summit. I followed the ridge to the massive ledge overlooking the gap at the end of Wassataquoik Lake and had open woods down to about 2500' and fairly thick woods from there to the talus slope.
All in all, a tough but rewarding day. If I were to do it again, I would not bushwhack the entire ridge. I would approach Wassataquoik from Greens Falls (which Greg said tended to be more open up to the ridge) and visit the talus slope as a standalone visit. Mullen was NE3k #442/457 for me. |
