Comments: Cool and windy day for this excellent peak, but incredible views were had. The day started off with fog on Katahdin but a mix of sun and clouds elsewhere. I was backpacking in to Russell Pond and started my bushwhack when I was close to due west of the massive talus slope on the NE flank of the mountain off the Wassataquoik Stream Trail. I had generally good woods right up to the talus slope, which gave great views into much of Katahdin. I continued to slab along the very steep north flank of the mountain between 2600-2800' and visited several other talus slopes, though none were quite as good as the first one (which is also the easiest to reach). This mountain seems to be fairly unique among northeast mountains in that it has talus on the north, rather than the south, side. When I was close to north of the summit, I bushwhacked up and followed the scrubby ridge to the open summit. This was unexpected - I didn't realize the summit was above treeline, which made the top an excellent gem. Going back, I followed the ridge down, which was mostly wide open once I got below treeline. Oddly, the woods were more open on the south side of the ridge rather than the north side. This was an excellent peak. I plan to return here someday. This was NE3k #441/457 for me.
