Trails
Trails: Marston Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, September 10, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We arrived at the lot around 7:40 and most of the spots were already taken. We got the last of the twelve or so "head in" spots, but about three more can squeeze in parallel to the road. There's an outhouse and a picnic table next to the parking lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All water crossings were easy
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is mostly in excellent condition. There's one minor blowdown near the beginning of the 0.8 mile segment to the summit, and then there are some severely eroded sections higher up on that segment.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs allowed in BSP
Bugs
Bugs: No bugs to speak of on the way up, but there were A LOT of little gnats right at the summit that were really annoying. They were only on the last few boulders at the very summit. 20 feet away from the summit there were no bugs.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Trail was very clean. I found one hiking pole tip, which I carried out.

Comments
Comments: Marston Trail is great. It's never particularly steep until the section right after Brothers Pond, but then there's a beautiful flat section after that. The mossy green forest is beautiful. Brothers Pond is also very nice, a great rest spot. The last half mile section to the summit takes on a whole different character, though. First there's a boulder climb through the woods with some tricky scrambles, then the difficult climbing continues for a short distance once you break treeline, then it gets easier for the final approach to the summit. Views were great on this day, especially of Katahdin, Doubletop, and the many lakes. Some other hikers were heading over to Fort Mt, but we didn't do that.
North Brother was NE 4K #67 for me!
