Today we hiked Mount Kineo for the first time. We caught the 8:00 ferry from Rockwood, and started down Carriage Road. We followed Carriage Road along the shore to Hardscrabble Point, where there are campsites, and nice views across the lake.
We then started down North Trail as it headed along the lake for a while before climbing steeply up the ridge. At the summit, I attempted to climb the fire tower, and sneak past the wasp nest about 2/3 of the way up, but they noticed me, and chased me off the tower.
Luckily, there is a great clifftop viewpoint down a herd path just to the south of the summit. We enjoyed lunch and the views for a while, before heading down the Bridle and Indian Trails. The Indian Trail follows the cliff edge, and passes many great viewpoints.
After reaching the bottom, we had a snack at the clubhouse, before taking the 1:45 ferry back to Rockwood. It was quite a unique and beautiful hike, and I recommend doing the full 5.9 mile loop, as it gets you away from the crowds and is very beautiful as it passes along the lake. |
