Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the Notch Trail 10.9 miles up Success Pond Rd. Road is in good condition, the first few miles are the roughest. The road up to the Notch Trail is very narrow, the bushes on both sides of the road were brushing my car. We parked just before the second bridge. Comments
Comments: This hike was a loop to redline the trails at the northern end of the Mahoosuc Trail. Up the Notch Trail and then Mahoosuc Trail through Mahoosuc Notch. It took us 1 hour 45 minutes to make it through the notch. The path through the notch was not very well blazed, but by following the footprints on the rocks we were able to make it through. We just had daypacks, but had to take them off 3 times. The AT through hikers with their large packs had a much more difficult time. It is a long climb up to Old Speck. By the time we got to Mahoosuc Arm, a cloud had settled in so there were no views. At Speck Pond visibility was just a few yards. It was a quick trip down Speck Pond Trail and then a 30 minute road walk back to the car. It took us 11 hours. It started to rain just as we left. We saw about a dozen through hikers on the Mahoosuc Trail and 2 day hikers on the Speck tail.
