Today I hiked a loop up and over Mount Abraham. I started from Barnjam Road and ascended to the AT using the herd path/bushwhack route which comes out to the north of Lone Mountain. From there, I followed the AT and the Mount Abraham Trail to the summit. The Mount Abraham Trail passes through some beautiful forest before breaking out into the alpine zone.
At the summit, I was treated to amazing 360 degree views, and I only saw one other group of two people up there. After enjoying it for about an hour, I continued along the ridge onto the South Side Trail. This trail goes over 3 subpeaks of Abraham, and has lots of beautiful views in the alpine zone. After dropping into the trees, it was an easy descent back to Barnjam Road at Mile Marker 7.
I finished off my hike with a 2.2 mile road walk. Along the way, I had quite the moose encounter! I stopped by the side of the road to pick blackberries. As soon as I start walking again, probably about 30 feet away from me in some bushes a cow and a bull moose stand up. They must've been bedded down. I ran a bit, in case the bull decided to charge, but he didn't, so I walked back and got a few pictures of him with my good camera.
All in all, it was an excellent 8.5 mile loop with a lot of above-treeline hiking. It's a good alternative to an out-and-back on the Firewarden's Trail if your car has good clearance, and you have good navigation skills for the first section up to the AT. |
