Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: After significant rain earlier in the week, we walked thru Howe Brook on Pogy Botch trail — rocks to hop were underwater. Northern Maine is not in drought like much the rest of the state.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Most blazes are weathered and some times difficult to see. As you gain in elevation, the blazes give way to more cairns some of which are sizable and others are more minuscule. A big part of the challenge of this trail is navigating it….staying on it. Lots of pauses to find our way.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs allowed in Baxter State Park so no issue
Bugs
Bugs: Minor. On the tallis slope up to The Traveler one of us was bothered by bees but not stung. We met a hiker at the summit who had been stung.

Comments
Comments: The most challenging hike we’ve done in a long while and we’ve been doing other difficult routes in the park (Katahdin, Coe slide/Brothers, etc.) Just over 10 miles, , 3800’ cumulative elev gain over multiple summits, took us 11 hours — ranger suggested we plan on 10-12 hrs on the trail. Saw max 10 other people on the trail. 80 degree temps, lots of sun exposure. Electrolytes, 3 Liters of water and plenty of hi energy foods plus sun protection. A very tough hike with amazing views! We were told there would be no water on the trail but we did find an accessible spring after the tallis field heading up to the main Traveler summit. Advised to do the trail counterclockwise.
