We made our way up to Chimney Pond for what was supposed to be a 2 night stay and a Katahdin summit attempt. Mother Nature had other plans for us. The trails started dry with some minor mud here and there. We made it up to the lean-tos with the last mile or so being in the rain. It continued to rain for the next 24 hours plus. We explored a bit around the pond and hung out in our lean-tos. The area received over 3 inches of rain in the time we were up there and the Ranger warned us of the potential of a dangerous crossing on the way out due to the amount of rain. Because of the crossing problem and the lack of an opportunity to summit, we decided to head down a day early. We hiked out in the rain with high water and flooded trails. We made it down safely, headed to town a got a room to dry out. |
