Comments: Today, I finally got the chance to hike a mountain which has been on my list for quite a while, South Turner. We started at Roaring Brook around 7:30 and started up Russell Pond Trail, before turning right on Sandy Stream Pond Trail to reach South Turner Mountain Trail. From that trail junction, it isn't long before the trail starts climbing. It's a relatively short, but very steep climb up to the alpine summit of South Turner Mountain. The last section of trail is scrambling through above-treeline boulders with spectacular views of Katahdin.

At the summit, we were treated to an amazing 360 degree panorama. The summit provides the best up-close view of the east side of Katahdin that there is, and there were also great views into the interior of the park. Besides one group we passed descending while we were ascending, we had the entire mountain to ourselves all day. After lingering at the summit for a while, we descended and enjoyed the views across Sandy Stream Pond on the way back.

We also spotted two moose on the trip, one in Sandy Stream Pond we saw from near the summit of South Turner, and one we came across on Sias Hill Road on the way back home. South Turner is an amazing mountain, and it's well worth the trip.
