Trails: Goose Eye Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 25, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I made myself a parking spot on the side of the logging road. The road was mostly plowed from Berlin up to Grafton Notch area, though the Grafton notch side had perhaps 3" of fresh snow on top of the plowed road. It was easily manageable with a 4-wheel drive.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Ice - Blue, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Lower down, the trail was a bit wet, with slush and some moving water underneath the snow. Otherwise, everything was easy to step across.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The approach to the trail from the road is a tight squeeze through the saplings growing in the old road.

Comments
Comments: The trail had a moderate grade and less than 6" of snow except for drifts up high by the summit. The last steep 0.5 miles to the summit were black and blue ice underneath 4-6" of snow. For the most steep sections, it made me want crampons, though I made do with my microspikes, even if I fell a few times.
