Number 5 Lake Road was in good shape, drove it with my tiny honda, no problems. Although it's entirely possible to drive nearly all the way to the top of the mountain on the service road (paved and decayed paving, gravel) with 4WD and high clearance, I wouldn't advise it (the road is extremely narrow and steep with little room to pull aside) and there's no glory in it. Better to park below the first yellow gate or at the boat launch as MMG suggests and walk up the road. |

Considering quality of experience, I'm not sure how this peak made it into the MMG--the hike is essentially a partly paved/decayed paved service road; the firetower is inaccessible (topped with a radar dome/ lower stairs removed/ gated off), and the views are marred by utility lines & com tower bling. One drives out about 30-45 minutes on bumpy gravel roads just to start. There is a spare ledge about 60' above the tower with views west but it can't make up for the industrial feel of the hike overall. the true summit, wooded, is located just beyond the second tower (side road to left just before first tower). Meh. |
