Success Pond Rd. was a bit washboard-y in spots but I've seen it in much worse shape. If you have half-decent clearance and keep your eyes peeled you can "cruise" along at about 25 mph for most of it. |

Started up the Carlo Col trail around 8 AM on a hazy, slightly muggy, yet still breezy morning. Not more than a half mile after leaving the logging road I spooked a murder of crows a few hundred feet ahead of me. A bit odd, I thought as they dispersed to the treetops. A bit closer and the smell hit me, and several more steps after that left me face-to-face with a weeks-old moose carcass right on the side of the trail. Safe to say I was the spooked one at that point. Hauled it up to the col from there in an attempt to distance myself from anything else that might've been drawn by the stench. (All that notwithstanding, the trail is in fine shape - lightly trafficked but still easy enough to follow. Same goes for most of the Goose Eye trail, on that note).
A few muddy patches and slippery rock sections to be found along the AT between the two peaks but nothing terrible. Encountered a few thru-hikers along this stretch - only people I saw all day. Moderately heavy haze kept the views from being 100% (couldn't really make out anything further than the Presidentials to the south) but Goose Eye's conical summit is an experience in itself. Feels like more of a 4,000-footer than a lot of actual 4,000-footers. Views up the range to the immediate north were great.
Heading back down, the Goose Eye trail just below the summit was a bit treacherous; very steep and narrow with a lot of wet rock surfaces, some of them hidden below overreaching branches. It did soon widen out, though, and was in good shape for the rest of the descent - runnable in a few places, even. Was back at the car by 12:30.
