Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks The Roost, ME
Trails
Trails: Roost Trail, Roost View Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, July 17, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Pulloffs on the side of the road near both trailheads. Don't forget that Route 113 through Evans Notch is closed in the winter, so you could not drive to these trailheads during that time.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Just a couple very small brooks. No issues.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Southeast side of Roost Trail is in good condition. There's no trail sign on Route 113 where this side starts, but if walking across the bridge over Evans Brook and watching the east side of the road, it can't be missed. West side of Roost Trail is much more eroded and somewhat wetter - it's clear that most people go up and back that way. Roost View Spur is in good condition, but finding it from the summit of the Roost can be challenging - the large "Scenic View" sign has an arrow but it doesn't point directly in the direction of the trail. There's a very small "View" sign that does point in the correct direction, but that's easy to miss. Perhaps blazes painted on the summit ledge would help to show which direction to descend the ledge in order to follow the spur trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I guess.
Bugs
Bugs: Not too many, but they were still out.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: This was a nice way to finish the day. From the southeastern trailhead, the trail starts off flat and mostly smooth, crossing a few small brooks. Then it climbs to the top of the Roost with mostly moderate grades and fairly good footing. The view spur is described in the WMG as being steep - however, except for a steep pitch directly below the summit ledge and a semi-open ledge just above the lower end of the spur, it's actually quite moderate. That final descent to the most open ledges could be more difficult if the ledge is wet, however the view from the top of that ledge is still pretty good. We descended the west side of the trail - this was mostly a continuous, moderate, fairly rough descent, with an easier and more gradual part near the bottom and then a final short, steep, and rocky descent back to the road.

This was an enjoyable hike that took us less than an hour.
