Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks The Owl, ME
Trails
Trails: Hunt Trail, The Owl Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, July 15, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: $15 day-use fee for non-Maine residents. The hike starts from Katahdin Stream Campground, which is a Katahdin trailhead and often fills up fast, so getting a day-use parking reservation might be a good idea.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only major crossing was rock hopped with care (wet rocks made for slightly tricky footing).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The Owl Trail definitely shows signs of lighter use, but overall it was in good shape and easy to follow for experienced eyes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No pets of any kind allowed in Baxter State Park.
Bugs
Bugs: Annoying, but they were individual bugs as opposed to swarms of them, so not as bad as it could be, I guess.

Comments
Comments: The lower 1.1 mile section of the Hunt Trail was in good shape as usual. Once on the Owl Trail, the going got noticeably tougher and steeper, with several parts of the trail showing signs of light use, but not a problem if you’re experienced and physically fit. The scrambling past where the trail first breaks out of the trees was dry, but could be an issue if wet. Stupendous views from the summit as well as the open ledges leading to it- Katahdin looked especially imposing due to it being so close.
