I first tried the north approach off Grand Falls Road but the upper part of the old road by Limestone Hill was clogged with logging slash and really ugly walking. I drove to the S approach off North Flagstaff Road and followed a series of overgrown trails. Up to the Limestone-Flagstaff col the trails were weedy but easy to follow. Beyond that there were a lot of blowdowns and higher up significant erosion down to the cobbles, and the trail required more care to follow. I saw some evidence that it is still being used, including beaten routes around obstacles but there are far more moose than people using it. The fire tower is still standing but the ladder is cut off up high and hard to reach and the cab is gone. There is a fine view from the open ledges at the bottom, however, looking S and E. OSM shows the route over the mountain as a snowmobile trail but I doubt it's being maintained for that (or any other) use anymore. There will be a writeup on my website shortly. |
