What a perfect day for Sunday River Whitecap! We took the route up through Miles Notch which is a little more than 6 miles round-trip and never gets very steep. It follows an old logging road for about a mile, before following an unofficial trail for the next mile. This trail is well defined and is as easy to follow as any official trail in the area. After meeting up with the Grafton Loop Trail, it's a little more than a mile to the summit.
The summit is home to an extensive alpine zone, which you pass through more of approaching from the north than if you were to approach from the south. This allows for spectacular 360 degree views from the summit area. There are especially good up close views of Old Speck and all of the major peaks in the Mahoosucs. We only saw one other person the whole time, but when we returned to Grafton Notch, it was swarmed with tourists at all of the roadside stops and other parking areas. We were glad to avoid the crowds yet again! |
