Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: This little peak is in Dixfield, Maine off ME 142. There is VERY limited parking (no parking available in winter) on a small dirt skirt on the side of Moxie Heights Rd. Holds one car only. I have only ever been the only car there in all the times I’ve been. Red Ledge Rd is now posted “No Parking.” That’s fine anyway as the dirt road is very rutted with tire sucking frost evacuation. Consult Maine Mountain Guide for full directions.

Comments
Comments: After working all night, and grabbing 3 hours sleep, I refused to let another great spring day get away from me. So off we went to a local peak. This 1,590 foot peak in Dixfield, Maine offers surprisingly great views from its semi-open summit. The hike is about 2.5 miles round trip in classic Maine style: hike straight up the mountain to the top, turn around, and slide- I mean HIKE- down.

You will need trail descriptions from either the Maine Mountain Guide or Mainetrailfinder.com to hike this trail.

The trail follows a private drive, then a good woods road up the western flank of the mountain where it veers off into the woods at a carin. There are bits of pink and orange flagging tape after turning off the woods road to help mark the route. Be accustomed to following Maine “trails” as the footbed is shallow and infrequently travelled. As we say here, “if you’re still walking up you aren’t at the top.”

The Presidentials were in full view today. Black Mountain Ski resort has lost all its snow. It’s neighbor, Rumford Whitecap, appeared snow free also. Many other peaks of the Mahoosuc range and Androscoggin river valley also in full view looking snow free. I think the summer hikers can stay out...
