Old trail up east ridge is very rough and has lots of blowdowns, but isn't too difficult to follow, thanks in part to flagging close to the summit. The white blazed Morrill Ledges Trail is very well maintained with only 1 log to step over. |

Peru may not be the first town in Western Maine that comes to mind when you think of hiking destinations, but it actually has five mountains with trails and good views! After doing Black Mountain on Sunday, today I hiked up Morrill Ledges.
From the trailhead on Valley Road, I followed old roads and an old, disused trail up the mountain's east ridge. I passed by some interesting cellar holes, and although the old trail was quite obscure, I was able to follow it without issue, and some flagging near the summit helped.
The ledges on and just east of the summit offer spectacular views of the surrounding areas, particularly to the south. The huge sloping ledges are very unique and fun to scramble around on.
On the way down, I followed the white blazed trail, which seems to be the way most people hike the mountain (Note that this is different than the approach from the north shown on All Trails which follows ATV trails.). This trail is very well marked, is well maintained, and should be able to be easily followed by most hikers. It should be noted that the trail was recently rerouted due to logging, so it now starts to the left of the old road when leaving the trailhead, instead of following the old blazes to the right, which are still visible and more obvious than the new trail.
Morrill Ledges offer spectacular views for not much effort, and I'm surprised that more people have yet to discover it! |
