Comments
Comments: Cold weather hiking season is here in the Western Maine Mountains. Today I ascended Caribou Mountain from the east. The first few turns which others have said could be confusing are now well-marked with arrows on trees. The Caribou Trail never gets too difficult as it ascends into the Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness, but it does pass through some beautiful hardwood forest.

At the junction in the col between Caribou and Gammon, I turned onto the Mud Brook Trail for the final half mile. At the summit, the views were outstanding, but it was very cold and windy. From the summit the views stretch from Sebago Lake to Mount Blue, Elephant Mountain, and the Presidentials.

Caribou has an expansive area of summit ledges which are fun to explore. Different views can be had from a variety of outcroppings, including one excellent cliff-top view to the east.

This was my first time up Caribou and I would say that it is now one of my favorites! I'll be back to climb it from the west.
