Opted for Stone Mountain figuring it would be less crowded that Burnt Meadow mountain which is accessed from the same trail head. Ended up being the case as I had the summit all to myself. As noted the parking lot is blocked (town closed trail head in April) but there was no note at kiosk indicating trails were still closed. A nice out and back to Stone - there are some steep sections getting there but a lot of nice and easy grades as well. All trails were dry with the exception of a couple of mud patches on the twin brook trail. In the lower part of the twin brook trail there has been logging which makes the tail a bit difficult to find in spots. The yellow blazes sometimes disappear but someone has flagged the trail with orange and pink flagging which will keep you on track. Note that there are a number of blue blazes in this stretch - I assume boundary markers but they did confuse some hikers I ran across since the Burn Meadow mountain trail is blue blazed. Stone mountain trail is blazed blue and also has flagging to keep you on the trail. You don't get the views you get from Burnt Meadow though there are a few spots to see the surrounding area and peaks. The summit is just covered with acres of blueberries making it a good peak to visit later in the year! |
