| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Varney Rd still had snow on it and looked very rough so I didn’t drive down it to the parking area on the right (which was obvious walking by) and I wouldn’t recommend it for most cars. There was a small pullout on Danforth Ln shortly before the sign for parking for the trail. Also, if you’re lucky enough to drive through East Parsonsfield on your way there, there is a superb view of the Whites with many different peaks visible. Washington of course was very dramatic. It is not far from the East Parsonsfield post office. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One little nonconsequential step over. It could easily be taken care of. The trail is marked with the Frances Small Heritage Trust turtles. It is now signed where it turns right of Varney Rd and into the woods (the guidebook says there’s only a red block of wood with a painted yellow turtle marking the turnoff so the sign was a welcome sign!). No problems following it. |

After my quick redline of the Smith Trail I had time to squeeze this guy in before the sunset. Definitely more snow here and it didn’t seem as well travelled as the trails on Sawyer Mtn. There was only one other set of bootprints I saw. I wore my waterproof boots as snow coverage was more complete here. There were tire tracks on Varney Rd past the parking area and they could get icy if it were cold enough overnight.
Nice view over the ponds and surrounding hills but the best view of the day was, by far, a stunning view of Mount Washington and the White Mountains as seen from a road somewhere in East Parsonsfield not real far from the post office. |
