| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked at the end of Owls Head Rd in Shapleigh where Pitts Rd begins. You should park here as the guidebook describes. Only room for a couple cars but I don’t think it’s too popular a trailhead so it shouldn’t be an issue. The roads in were free of snow and ice but were a little soft so I wouldn’t go too fast. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
None |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The trail is unmarked (officially) but there are a few pieces of surveyors tape on trees on the ledges. I only saw one cairn on the ledges. Once on the ledges there’s many different ways to go but they all lead to the same place. Staying towards the middle would work too. One large widow maker way up there before the ledges. Nothing else. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
None seen but should be fine for them. |
|
| Bugs: |
Saw a couple flying things at one point. Don’t believe they were the annoying kind. |
|
| Lost and Found: |
Some trash along the way and a red whistle hung on a tree before the ledges. |

A nice little evening redline. The guidebooks description was spot on. From the drivable end of Owls Nest Rd Pitts Rd goes right. Make sure you don’t continue straight on Owls Nest Rd. The road portion had a section of snow/ice on it that microspikes would have been helpful for but beyond that they were not needed and I did okay without them. The ledges were totally bare although some rocks were a bit wet although they were easy to avoid. The ledges portion has many different wide paths on it. Some are on erodes rock and others more gravelly from the ATVs. All seemed to lead to the summit though. Some muddy parts if you took the gravelly paths as opposed to the ledgy ones. Good views 100yards last the summit as the guidebook describes. I could see Washington and the southern presidentials, the Wildcats, Carter Notch, and part of the Carters, what may have been part of Montalban Ridge, what I believe what Carrigain or Nancy or something close to them, then Passaconaway and the Tripyramid closer by, just the tip of Chocorua, Mount Shaw, and part of the Belknaps (Gunstock) as well as some nearby mountains such as Sugarloaf and what I believe was Cooke Crown.
47F to start at 5:45pm and somewhere around 40F at 7pm. Nice sunset views from the top and somewhat cloudy but good visibility. Not much wind and nobody else seen. |
