Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plowed, signed, flat parking area off of Watson Pond Rd. Parking lot could hold at least 20 cars. The sucker is huge! Watson Pond Rd is paved and plowed. It is not quite wide enough to be a two lane road, though. Travel slower. I approached this road off of ME 27.

Comments
Comments: This a wonderfully built trail near Rome, Maine. It is a 4.7 mile loop around and over Round Top mountain (1,133 feet). It is very well blazed in bright blue with correct double blazing for turns. Professionally made wood or metal signs are at every junction. This would be an excellent trail for a novice. Beautiful rock stairs flank each side of the upper portion of the mountain. The summit is signed.

You can hike the loop in either direction. I elected to take the loop counterclockwise. Part of this trail is shared with the Kennebec Highlands Trail (a wide multi-use trail for mountain bikes, cross country skiing, and horseback riding) but remains blazed in blue through that shared section.

There is a good view from the summit of the Kennebec valley/ Belgrade Lakes area. There is also quite a view from the northeastern side as you are climbing up to the spur.

As of this date there was less than half an inch of snow on the trail. I used microspikes but lighter traction would have been more than enough. Watch for the “smiling rock!”

When leaving I noted a small neon sign nailed to a tree at the end of the parking area. Upon closer examination I saw that it was a laminated sign with an directional arrow and picture of a fat bike. Then I saw more signs behind that one along a trail and with a wooden bridge. Looks to be a nice fat bike course!
