Comments
Comments: Finally hit my first Maine 4000 footer with 2 friends. We chose this to beat the forecasted rains later in the day and it was a wise choice. No rain until we drove back to Gorham,NH. Unusually warm day in January made the snow soft and a little sticky. We chose the snowshoes from the parking lot until the return. There appears to be a lot more snow above 3000 feet than I’ve seen all winter in NH. We all agreed that snowshoes were the only wise option as the huge postholes started to appear around 3000 feet. We saw one hiker descending in snowshoes and three others postholing their way down. This made some of the trail very difficult to walk on. We just couldn’t see how they enjoyed the day with pulling their feet out of 12 inch deep holes being made, but I guess it’s hike your own hike. Hopefully the predicted rain and more warm temps on Sunday help melt the mess and new snow will return someday soon.
