Plenty of room at the AT crossing lot in Grafton Notch. Room for maybe five or six cars in small gravel lot on East B Hill Road just west of the AT crossing. |

The bog bridge between the Baldpate peaks has rotted and disappeared to the point it is not possible to cross without stress and muddy feet. I pity the AT backpackers that suffered with this all season. |

Not off to an early start after car drop we were on the trail at 10 am. We went up Table Rock and enjoyed nice views under the clear sky. Lots of nice stone steps up to Baldpate Mt. West Peak, we met only two people coming down a backpacker and a nearly naked running man. On top the sky was darkening with high clouds but still great views and plenty of bright gold foliage below greeted us. We found patches of ice on the trail down to the col so we counted our blessings we started late. Mud pit with rotted bog bridges has evidence of many were forced to step into the deep mud, the depth of the mud pit is the full length of a hiking pole. We made fast work on the nice dry ledges on East Peak. Still super views but the had wind picked up and it was a warning weather was on the way. Fun hiking down and over to Little Baldpate and from there it is amazingly straight steep down hike something like 1300 vf in a mile, no switchbacks just straight down to the Frye Notch Lean-to. From here it was fun booking down the leaf covered trail. Dunn Falls was lovely. Just before we reached the car rain started spitting on us. But we didn't have to use windshield wipers until we returned to Grafton Notch. Fun day on the trail with lots of sunshine provided by Adam and Hallie. |
