Comments
Comments: we followed doubletop mountain trail to double top stream where we started our bushwhack south up the drainage towards squaws. the trail was wet and slippery owing to rain last night. in hindsight we should have left the trail before dropping to the stream which would have yielded a friendlier start up the drainage. the going was really good with lots of open hardwoods and glades with short conifer sections. once on the steeper climb to the summit ridge the woods remained open (now coniferous), but footing more rocky. about 100 ft below the summit ridge the going became pretty difficult and steep with large rocks, deep holes and thick scrub. the difficulty was compounded by wet woods and a stiff cold breeze. we popped out a bit west of the highpoint and the woods moderated, but remained scrappy, heading east to the summit which is on a mostly open knob with great views. we then headed back along the ridge and over the south summit of veto which had another great view from its highpoint. some nice glades mixed with scrappy conifers along the way. continuing north along the ridge we enjoyed a great stretch of magical gladed woods which continued most of the way down to the saddle with veto proper. a short, steep climb and we gained the summit of veto and its cliffs which have an amazing eastern view over the park. a steep drop down to the north dropped us in more glades which we followed down to the next saddle. from there we dropped off the ridge to the east with good going and once grades moderated we turned more north to intersect double top trail north of the brook crossing.
