Approached this peak from the Canadian side. Passport is required. After passing the border continue on the road for a ways. Turn left on the route marked as 212. Gosford Park entrance on the left is well signed. Follow the paved and then gravel road to the park headquarters. Check in. I paid by credit card which was hit for $12.13 which covered both of us. You can buy a map of the park and its roads for $3 US. Follow the park road for quite a distance. Towards the end you will be forced to turn left. Shortly after that turn right on Ch. de la Grive road. This is rough in places. |

At the end of the Ch. de la Grive it opens out into a large area. We parked as instructed over to the right. As suggested by the park official we took the well used ATV path. It was pretty steep and gravely in places with a minor water crossing at the beginning. Poles really helped particularly descending on the return. After hiking it a mile it brings you to the swath. Turned left and followed the ATV path in the swath for one mile to the summit. I tried to be totally legal and stay on the Canadian side for the entire hike. Since the easy to hike ATV path in the swath stays on the Canadian side this seemed possible. But upon reaching the summit I noticed that the summit area slopes upward towards the US side where there is a large rock cairn. Since I like to touch the highest point I gave up on being totally legal and crossed over. After some trouble we did get the canister cover off. About this time a helicopter following the border buzzed us then swooped down and around for a closer look. It then resumed its flight over the border. Got back to the car and had lunch there using a conveniently placed picnic table. There is also a privy on the edge of the parking area. |
