Took Morton's Cutoff from Rt. 16, west of Rangeley then turned right on to Tim Pond Road/Lincoln Pond Road. After a bridge crossing took a sharp left at a four way intersection. Drove 3.2 miles and turned left over a bridge onto Wiggle Brook Road. Immediately on the right is Bear Brook road. Followed it for 2.2 miles and parked near the first big road washout. Road is in tough shape with deep ruts and rough areas. Was able to drive over exposed culvert with 4 wheel drive high clearance vehicle. |

After a 2 mile road walk with lots of wild flowers we came to a large area, the former parking lot before the washouts. Headed straight up the slash and eventually found the herd path on the right just before the slash turns left. Herd path appears to have had some ATV usage. A ways up we encountered a small cairn. We turned left here and followed the lightly flagged path uphill. We lost the herd path for a short time so followed a bearing that got us back on track. Came to a medium size cairn and continued past it to the summit of White Cap. There were several blowdowns along the way which require careful circumnavigation so as to not lose the herd path. After signing the summit register we returned to the cairn in the col. Although there was a path to the right it led in the wrong direction downhill. Took a bearing and bushwhacked thru the col finding a herd path that took us along a ridge to the summit of KD. This herd path is very overgrown – gloves and eye protection recommended. Since the book in the glass canister was full, we left a new one and a new pencil. Returned to the herd path in the col that we hiked up on. Total hike length was 8.3 miles including the road walk. |
